Ruth Wilhelmina Whyte

Ruth Whyte of the Bronx, New York, formerly of Jamaica and London, passed away on June 21, 2021. She was 84 years old. Born in St Elizabeth, Jamaica to Charles Hendricks and Clementina Powell, Ruth was one of six children. She was raised in St. Elizabeth where she attended elementary school. After graduating elementary school, Ruth went to work at the Post Office in Jamaica while raising two children.

At the age of 24, Ruth decided to move to London to seek a better life. She worked as an LPN at the hospital during the day and a seamstress at night. She also took classes to further her career as an LPN. She met her husband of 56 years, George Whyte. The couple married in London and raised their 6 children together.

In 1980 Ruth decided to come to the US. She moved on her own and settled in the Bronx. Although she loved New York she missed her family in London. She was very excited when her son Leonard joined her in 1988. She continued to work as an LPN. In her spare time Ruth loved to travel, go on excursions, cook and bake. She will be remembered for her famous meat balls, pork chops and fried saltfish.

Ruth will be remembered as a kind, generous, patient and God-fearing lady. She adored her children, especially her grandchildren and great granddaughter.

Ruth is survived by her children Roydel (Bernadette) Walker, Leonard Woodstock, Peter Whyte, Derrick Whyte, James (Janet) Whyte and Fay Whyte. Ruth will be missed by her grandchildren, great granddaughter, sister Lurline Blackwood, brothers Noel and Earl Hendricks, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and extended family. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Ruth's remains will be repatriated to Jamaica where she will be laid to rest with her family in Springfield, St Elizabeth. For more information or to leave a condolence please visit www.pelhamfuneral.com
