Pelham and Mount Vernon

Roland Scharrer passed away peacefully on October 20, 2025. He was 90 years old.

Roland Scharrer was born in Bronxville, NY and spent his first six years living in Yonkers, NY before moving to Pelham, NY in 1941. Aside from time away for college and graduate school and a brief period early in his career, he lived in the same house for almost his entire life. He graduated from Pelham Memorial High School in 1953, Columbia University in 1957 (B.S. in Chemistry), and from the University of Rochester in 1961 (Ph.D., Organic Chemistry). For his entire career (37 years), he worked as a research chemist at Arizona Chemical Company, first in Stamford, CT, and later in Tuxedo Park, NY.

In 1964, he married Barbara Wadsworth. They would remain married for 61 years and raised their 2 children together. Throughout his life he enjoyed hiking, bird watching, and tending to his vegetable garden. He and Barbara loved traveling around the United States, especially to visit the National Parks in the West. After retirement, one of his favorite pastimes was walking around Pelham, and dropping in to chat with friends and acquaintances at many local businesses.

Roland will be remembered as a dedicated husband and father. He is predeceased by his sister, Eveline Inksetter. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, son, Eric (Jo), daughter, Diana, and one granddaughter, Hannah.
