It is with great sadness that the family of Richard Varricchio announces his passing on May 11, 2025, at the age of 87. Richard, known affectionately as "Richie," was born and raised in the Bronx to Carmela (nee Ruocco) and Guarino Varricchio. He was the second of five children, and his roots in the Bronx were an integral part of who he was.
Richie graduated from James Monroe High School in 1956, and that same year, fate brought him together with the love of his life, Frances (née Inzana), through a meeting arranged by his cousin. The two were married in 1960, beginning a lifelong partnership. Together, they raised their two daughters, Francine and Louise, in Pelham Bay. In 1960, Richie began his career at Con Edison, where he remained for 37 years until his retirement. Over the years he made many friends, with whom he cherished spending time and making memories. He was a dedicated family man who always put his wife and daughters first. Richie was loving, protective, generous, and loyal.
A lover of classic black-and-white films, Richie spent countless hours watching old movies and curating a collection of memorabilia that told the story of his passion. He was a man of quick wit and creativity, often surprising those around him with spontaneous poems, sharp one-liners, and a keen sense of humor that brightened any room.
He will be remembered for his devotion to his two grandchildren, Francesca and Richard. Though dementia slowly took his memories from him, he never lost his ability to express his love for his family.
Richie is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances; his daughters, Francine (Mark Rookwood) of Pelham, NY, and Louise (Jeffrey Adorno) of New Rochelle, NY; his grandchildren, Francesca and Richard Rookwood. He will also be dearly missed by his sister, Roseann Deluccia, his brother, Louis Varricchio, and his nieces, nephews, and friends. He is predeceased by his brothers, Augustine and Arthur.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 11:00 am at St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church, Bronx NY.
