Mildred McGuirt, 94, of Pelham Manor, NY, died peacefully on March 6th at Calvary Hospital, surrounded by her five loving children.
Born in 1917 in NYC to James Guilfoyle and Johanna Guilfoyle, nee McGrath, Mildred grew up in the Bronx, where she attended Saint Nicholas of Tolentine and Mount Saint Ursula. She graduated from the College of New Rochelle in 1939. Mildred was a talented musician, who studied both piano and voice and perfonned in amateur theater.
In 1943, Mildred married Robert McGuirt, her adoring and devoted husband of 47 years. In 1946, they set down roots in Pelham Manor, where they raised their family. Mildred later returned to her professional life, acquiring graduate degrees from CUNY and Bank Street in education and guidance, leading to her 17-year career with the NYC Board of Education. In her retirement, Mildred enjoyed playing bridge, attending theater and meeting friends at the Manor Club.
Mildred was an intelligent, eleqant and lovinq person throughout her life. She will be remembered as a generous and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, professional and friend, for she excelled at every role with which life presented her. And no matter the challenges she faced, Mildred never lost her beauty, charm or humor.
Mildred was predeceased by her doting husband Robert, as well as her three brothers Joseph, George and Walter, and her sister Loyola. She is survived by her five children, Patricia Shanna, Elizabeth Mutschler, Robert McGuirt, Kathleen Burrell and James McGuirt, her ten grandchildren and her five great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours will be 3-7pm on Sunday, March 11th at Pelham Funeral Home, 64 Lincoln Ave. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Monday, March 12th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Pelham Manor, internment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
