Kathleen Giebel

April 8, 1928 — December 24, 2017

Kathleen (Kay) Christal Giebel of Pelham passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2017. She was 89.

Kay was born in 1928 in New Rochelle to John and Margaret Keenan Christal.  She attended Prospect Hill School and graduated from PMHS in 1945.  Kay then began her career as a fashion model with the Hartford Agency in New York.

On August 17, 1950, Kay married her husband of 47 years, Colonel Howard A. Giebel in Fort Devens, MA.  They spent their early married years living at Lake Isle in Eastchester, and would go on to raise their three children at their Pelham home.    When the family was not in Pelham, they may have been found snorkeling off the beaches of Nevis, swimming in the surf at Vieques or tailgating before an Army football game at West Point.

After the children were raised, Kay spent some of her time doing volunteer work at the Pelham Public Library, Accents on Antiques and the Sound Shore Medical Center, New Rochelle. She was a member of the Pelham Country Club, the Huguenot Yacht Club and the Manor Club. She will be remembered as an elegant and gracious lady who loved family, was selfless and had a big heart.

Kay is survived by her three children, Kathleen (Ed) Mancuso, Barbara Casey and Howard (Beth) Giebel, grandchildren Tricia, Kathleen, Eddie and Maura, a great grandchild (Jenna), and her beloved dog Lacey.  She was predeceased by her husband, Colonel Howard A. Giebel, her sister, Jeanne Wayne and her brother, John Christal and of course, her furry friend Gilligan.

Visiting hours will be held at the Pelham Funeral Home located at 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham NY on Friday, December 29th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  A private interment will take place at the United States Military Academy at West Point.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a memorial contribution be made in her name to The American Kidney Fund. kidneyfund.org For more information or to leave a condolence, please visit pelhamfuneral.com.
