Joseph "Joe" Madden of Yonkers, New York, passed away suddenly on July 2, 2026, at the age of 63.
Born and raised in County Cavan, Ireland, Joe was the middle of seven children born to John and Mary Madden. He attended St. Patrick's National School in Loch Gowna and Moyne Community School in County Longford. Before emigrating, Joe worked on the family farm, where he developed a lifelong love of horses, particularly ploughing with horses and breaking young horses.
At the age of 19, Joe emigrated to New York in search of new opportunities and it was there that he met the love of his life, Maura. They were married in 1988 at St. Philip Neri Church in the Bronx and made their home in Yonkers, where they lovingly raised their two children, Joseph and Fiona.
Joe had a passion for travel and embraced every opportunity, from cruises throughout the Caribbean to treasured trips home to Ireland. His heart never left County Cavan, and he remained a devoted supporter of Gaelic games throughout his life. Above all, Joe cherished his family and was known as a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, brother, Uncle, son and loyal friend.
In 2001, Joe and his family returned to County Cavan, where he fulfilled his dream of starting his own carpentry business. He spent 14 years working in Ireland before returning to the United States with his family. Upon his return, Joe became a proud member of Local 157 Carpenters Union and worked on projects at New York Law School in Brooklyn.
Joe will be remembered for his quiet nature, sharp wit, and kind heart. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a strong work ethic, and a genuine love for those around him. His warmth, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Maura; his children, Joseph and Fiona; his cherished granddaughter, Chelsea; his siblings, Margaret, Sean (Margaret) , Pat (Gail), Tony (Margaret), Anne (Hughie) and Kathleen; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary, and by his brother, John Madden , who died at birth.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Joe's life at Pelham Funeral Home, 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, New York, on Wednesday July 8th, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Barnabas Church, Martha Avenue and East 241st Street, Bronx, New York, on Thursday July 9th, at 9:30am. Joe’s remains will be repatriated home to Co Cavan, Ireland.
