John F. Gassler, 83, a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend, passed peacefully on March 12, 2026.
Born in New York City to Austrian immigrant parents, the late John and Mary Gassler, he grew up with a deep appreciation for hard work, perseverance, and strong family values that guided him throughout his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Wilma; his children, John (Lynn Liu), Steven (Susan), and Melissa (Blake Namba); and his cherished grandchildren, John Michael, Julianna, Jordan, Andrew, Jake, Emma, and Nicholas.
John pursued his education with dedication and earned his master’s degree from Iona College. Following his studies, he built a career working for several companies in New York City, where he was respected for his reliability, professionalism, and strong work ethic. While building his career and raising a family, he also proudly served as a reservist in the United States Army.
Among his greatest prides were the successes of his children: John, a cardiologist; Steven, a retired police officer; and Melissa, an attorney.
He had a lifelong love of sports. When his sons were young, he served as a Little League baseball coach, sharing his love of the game while teaching the values of teamwork and sportsmanship. He later took great pride in watching his children and grandchildren play sports. He also enjoyed playing golf and tennis whenever he had the opportunity. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and New York Jets.
Later in life, he found great joy serving as a crossing guard for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School, a role he truly loved. He wholeheartedly enjoyed the opportunity to greet students and families each day and was a familiar, friendly presence.
John treasured his friendships and the time spent with special friends throughout his life, sharing many memorable times and creating lasting bonds.
Above all else, he enjoyed spending holidays and special moments with his wife, children, and grandchildren, who he loved dearly and was extremely proud of.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of John’s life will take place at Pelham Funeral Home located at 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, NY, from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. A Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 575 Fowler Avenue, Pelham, NY 10803.
