James Hegarty of Yonkers, New York, formerly of Toureen Kilnamona Co. Clare, passed away suddenly on May 11, 2024 at the age of 56. James was one of nine children born to Pakie and Bridie Hegarty. James attended Kilnamona school and after attending the vocational secondary school in Ennis he decided to immigrate to New York in 1987 after obtaining a lottery visa. He was a gifted carpenter and enjoyed many years in the trade before joining the NYC Department of Homeless Services.
James met the love of his life, Eileen Daly, at the popular Sam Maguire’s Pub and never left her side. In 1999, they married at St. Denis Church in Yonkers and were blessed with three wonderful children, Kevin, Katrina and Patrick. The family moved to their home in Yonkers where they became parishioners of St. Barnabas Church. James was a devout catholic and a regular at Sunday morning mass.
James’ passion was cheering on his Co. Clare hurling teams and would never miss watching a senior game. He enjoyed his trips back home to Ireland, skiing, watching golf while he made his famous chicken parm and walking up and down his block talking to all the neighbors. James was dearly loved by all who knew him and you would never see him without a smile on his face or the offer of a helping hand.
James is survived by his wife, Eileen, their three children, his mother Bridie, siblings Mary (Kevin), Margaret (Michael), Brid, Angela (Michael), Kathleen (Paul), Patrick (Bernie), Flan (Brid) and Brian (Una), his aunts Kathleen Doherty, Martha Lee, uncles PJ and Thomas Warren. James is predeceased by his dear father Pakie and brother-in-law Gerard. He will be missed by his in-laws, John and Mary Daly, many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends.
While the sentiment is appreciated, James's family requests for flowers from the family only.
A celebration of James’s life will take place at the Pelham Funeral Home located at 64 Lincoln Ave., Pelham NY on Thursday, May 16th, from 4-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Barnabas Church located at 409 East 241 Street, Bronx, NY 10470 on Friday, May 17th at 10:45am. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
