Iris Delgado

Iris I. Delgado, a gentle soul who graced the world with her presence on July 10, 1936, in the warm embrace of Manaté, Puerto Rico, peacefully transitioned from this life on September 10, 2026. Her journey, spanning 90 years, was marked by love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community.

Iris's life was a beautiful testament to love and partnership. She married her beloved Edward (Ed) O. Delgado on September 1, 1956, in New York. Together, they embarked on a remarkable journey of 70 years, creating a legacy of love with their cherished daughter, Lillian Delgado-Krebs and son-in-law Richard Krebs, and cherished daughter Yvette Woods. Though Edward and their dear son-in-law, Jeffrey Richard Woods, have preceded her in passing, their memory continues to live on in the hearts of those who loved them dearly.

Her career as a teacher's assistant for over 25 years showcased her nurturing spirit and dedication to the growth and development of young minds. Iris's commitment extended beyond the classroom as she worked with the United Bronx Parents in community outreach and the Tremont-Monterey Day Care Center in the South Bronx. Her kindness was unmatched, often going the extra mile to provide warm clothing for children in need.

An active member of the Spanish-American Club in the Bronx, NY, Iris thrived in her roles on the club’s bowling and women's softball teams, where she was known as a skilled pitcher. She was instrumental in organizing the club's yearly scholarship fundraising events, delighting attendees of their farmer’s market with her famous codfish fritters where patrons would happily wait in line to enjoy those fritters. As a loyal parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Pelham, NY, she further highlighted her commitment to community and faith.

Iris found joy in life’s simple pleasures, particularly in cooking for her family and embarking on adventures with her beloved Ed to locations like Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Las Vegas, the Hoover Dam, Virginia Beach, Lake George, etc. Her travels with daughter Yvette and son-in-law Jeff to the Adirondack Mountains and with daughter Lillian and son-in-law Richard in Georgia were cherished memories. These journeys, filled with laughter and discovery, were a testament to her love of family and exploration.

Her personal grace, soft-spoken nature, and impeccable manners left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Yet, beneath her gentle exterior lay a resolute determination that allowed her to achieve her goals with elegance and poise.

Iris's legacy of love, kindness, and community service will forever be remembered by those whose lives she touched. She leaves behind a world made better by her presence, a family that carries her spirit forward, and a community indebted to her generosity and warmth.

Iris's life will be celebrated with a service on September 19, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, with parking available at 575 Fowler Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in her memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Calvary Hospice team, especially Nicole Bardia, LMSW, Mina Aboagyewa Asiama, RN, and home caregiver Rosemary, for their compassionate care of both Edward (Papi) and Iris.
