Gerald Carl Poinsette

December 17, 1943 — June 29, 2025

Mount Vernon

Gerald Carl Poinsette (Jerry), of Mount Vernon, New York, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2025. He was 81 years old. “For we know that when this tent we live in – our body here on earth – is torn down, God will have a house in heaven for us to live in, a home he himself has made, which will last forever (2 Corinthians 5:1)

Born in New Rochelle, New York, Gerald was the son of the late Wilfred Sr. and Kora Poinsette and one of four children. He would later relocate to North Pelham where he graduated from Pelham Memorial High School and went on to earn his degree from Virginia Union University, where he was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. Gerald also honorably served his country as a veteran of the United States Army.

On October 16, 1976, Gerald married the love of his life, Betty Jean. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with their beloved daughter, Krystal. Together they took annual trips during summer breaks and winter holidays to visit family in the South. Gerald was the original Uber. You could often find Gerald’s Lincoln Town Car packed with children as he transported his daughter’s Girl Scout troop, took Krystal and her friends to the mall, drove her friend’s home, or wherever else they planned to go.

Gerald had a long and fulfilling career at Liberty Lines Transit in Westchester County, NY where he began as a bus driver. Known for his strong work ethic, integrity, and professionalism, Gerald was promoted to Senior Operations Supervisor where he ran the Valhalla bus depot. He took pride in his work and was respected by colleagues and friends alike. Gerald worked the early shift and went to work at 4am so that he could pick his daughter up from school in the afternoon. Above all, Gerald was a devoted family man who faithfully provided for his family.

Gerald enjoyed music where he played the drums and often sang Motown hits during family holiday gatherings. Gerald was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be remembered for his unwavering love, steady presence, and generous spirit. His legacy lives on in the memories he created and the lives he touched.

Gerald is survived by his loving daughter, Krystal Howell of Pelham, NY; son-in-law Kevin Howell of Pelham, NY, and his cherished grandchildren, Kristian and Kaitlyn Howell (Pelham, NY). He is also survived by his sister, Rene (Capitol Heights, MD), his nephew Kyle (Mitchelle) Poinsette (South Orange, NJ), and his grandnephews and niece: Tarrell, Zacharie, and Harmonie; along with a host of in-laws and other family and friends. Gerald is reunited in eternal rest with his beloved wife, Betty Jean, his parents, Wilfred Sr. and Kora, and his brothers, Wilfred Jr. and Adrian.

He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
