Denis McCarthy

Denis McCarthy of Bronx, NY, formerly of Co Cork Ireland was called to his eternal reward on Sunday, December 1, 2019. He was 78 yers old.

Denis was born in Heir Island (Inis Ui Dhrisceoil), Skibbereen to Elizabeth (nee Minihane) and Jeremiah McCarthy, He was affectionately known as Denny "Bunny" by his native Heir Islanders and close relations. He inherited this nickname from his father Jeremiah.

While growing up on Heir Island Denis attended local schools. It was on Heir Island he found his passion for fishing and all things nautical. His passion for the water would eventually lead him to becoming a merchant marine in his teenage years. While on leave from the Irish Merchant Marines Denis would meet Mary Anne whom he knew growing up on Heir Island meet at the Lisheen Patternin (An Outdoor Dance Celebration) by Minihanes Pub in Skibbereen, Co. Cork during the Summer of 1963. Denis and Mary Anne were married on August 12th, 1967 at St. Comghall Church, and immigrated to the United States to raise their family.

Denis was a devoted and hardworking husband, father and grandfather who adored his family, fishing, and his alternate vacation residence of "Heir Island" with his loving wife of 52 years – Mary Anne. Denis and Mary Anne enjoyed vacationing together, celebrating their love of Irish music, culture and friendship with fellow Islanders and relations. Denis's greatest achievement was his remarkable devotion and work ethic that was integral towards providing a better future for his family. In his spare time he had a significant passion for the sea. He enjoyed teaching the rules of the ocean to his children and grandchildren, along with sharing his love for fishing in both New York and around Heir Island.

Denis will be sorely missed by his Wife – Mary Anne, who just returned from Heir Island with Denis from their annual vacation one week prior. He will also be missed by his children Denis (Bridget) McCarthy, Anna Marie (Martin) Murray, John (Karen) McCarthy, Michael (Sunita) McCarthy and Timothy (Jeannine) McCarthy. His is also survived by 13 grandchildren; Brianna, Connor, Mairead, Aileen, Katie, Denis Francis, John, Ciara, Dylan, Alana, Fiona, Tristan & Hudson. He will be missed by his sister Mary Falvey and his nephews, nieces, extended family and everyone he knew. He is predeceased by his 3 brothers Jeremiah, John and Timothy.

A celebration of Denis's life will take place at the Pelham Funeral Home, located at 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, New York on Thursday, December 5th from 2:00 to 5:00PM to 7:00 to 9:00. PM. A mass of christian burial will take place at St. Philip Neri Church, located at 3025 Grand Concourse Bronx, New York on Friday, December 6th at 10:00am.
