Carol Marie Smith

April 21, 1943 — August 28, 2023

Carol Marie Smith, whose caring nature and soft-spoken demeanor enriched the lives of everyone she knew, died peacefully on August 28. She was 80 years old.

Ms. Smith, known as “Nanny” by everyone, was a loyal and dedicated mother and grandmother. Nanny lived with her daughter Lorianne and grandchildren Caroline and James for the last 18 years. She was a regular presence and role model for all five of her grandchildren, which also included Sydney, Charlotte and Vincent.

Naturally giving, Nanny loved Christmas and decorating and gathering ornaments was a year-long endeavor for her. She also loved sweets, which was befitting of her sweet nature, and she could never turn down a good black and white cookie, ice cream, root beer float or any pastry.

More than anything, she was caring and it’s no accident that being a registered nurse was her chosen profession. Whether it was looking after her patients, children, grandchildren or friends, Nanny was a go-to person and calming presence for so many people.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., Ms. Smith went to nursing school and had a long and fruitful career in healthcare. After retiring, she moved to Pennsylvania and focused on family and being there for her grandchildren. She was a member of the Life St. Mary program and remained active and vibrant in her later years.

Ms. Smith is survived by her brother, Gerald Smith, daughters Suzanne Albano and Lorianne Tolbert (fiancée B.J. Schecter) and son Vincent Marion; daughter-in-law Christina Marion; and grandchildren Sydney, Caroline, James, Charlotte and Vincent.
