Joseph Mattesi

December 20, 1943 — November 5, 2025

Pelham

Joseph Mattesi of Pelham, New York, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, at the age of 81.

Joe, as he was known to his friends and family, was born in Manhattan. Joe was the youngest of two sons and was raised in the Bronx alongside his brother, Anthony. It was there he met his childhood sweetheart, Kathy, with whom he shared almost six decades of love and laughter. The two married in 1962 and moved to Pelham the following year, where they raised their five children and built a life centered around family, friendship, and community.

A devoted husband and father, Joe was a familiar face on the ballfields of Pelham, where he proudly coached Little League for many years. Under his guidance, several of his teams went on to win the District 21 championships—a source of great pride for both him and the players he mentored. A lifelong Yankees fan, Joe never missed a chance to share his knowledge of baseball. In his free time, he and Kathy loved to travel, especially on cruises, where they made countless happy memories together.

Joe built a successful career in the garage industry. In 1976, he purchased a garage in Lower Manhattan before moving on as part of the management team for Garage management Corp. Joe would later go on to become the Vice President of Teamsters Local 272 holding this position from 1997 until his retirement in 2023.

Known for his wisdom, generosity, and calm demeanor, Joe was often the steady voice of reason in any situation. His kindness and strength left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Joe is survived by his five loving children: Michael (Leah) Mattesi, Joseph Mattesi, Anthony Mattesi, Desiree Hanlon, and Denise Mattesi. He will also be deeply missed by his cherished grandchildren Daniel Mattesi, Jonathan Mattesi, Joseph Alexander Mattesi, Amanda Mattesi, Joseph Anthony Mattesi, Matthew Mattesi, Hunter Lyons, Audrey Hanlon, Madeline Handlon and Antonio Golfo who all came to know him as “POP”. He is predeceased by his wife Kathy and his brother Anthony.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held on Sunday, November 9, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Pelham Funeral Home, 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, November 10, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 575 Fowler Avenue, Pelham Manor, New York. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
